Facettas is an Apple iPhone application that facilitates the process of employee performance evaluations.  Regardless of the frequency with which your organization’s policy requires performance evaluations, they are critical to the success of the business.  They are an integral part of employee satisfaction, motivation, and performance management as well as organizational and career planning.  Facettas can also be used during the interview and hiring process.  Candidates can be evaluated against the same criteria and a relative score obtained to aid the employer during the interviews.

Evaluating Employees

Touch the detailed disclosure button that appears to the right of the employee’s or candidate’s name to begin their evaluation.  The evaluate screen shows the employee’s first and last name, the employees’ position title, and their overall rating.  Since no evaluation has taken place, the initial rating is zero.

This screen also has a list of the facets that were profiled for the position held by this employee or candidate.  Each facet will be listed in a row along with the facet’s importance (as defined during the profiler phase) and the current rating for that facet.  The initial rating is zero.

To evaluate the employee’s or candidate’s performance relative to any of the facets in the list, touch the desired facet.  This will bring up the performance screen.  This screen will show a list of the behaviors that were defined for the selected facet.  The most difficult behavior (or that exhibited by an expert) appears at the top of the list and the easiest at the bottom.

A line appears across the middle of the screen that shows the current rating.  As a finger slides up and down the screen, the rating will change to reflect the behavior currently under the middle line.  If the line is all the way at the top of the first behavior the rating equals the maximum of the scale, which is normally set at 100.  If the line is all the way at the bottom of the last behavior in the list, the rating will be zero.  You can assign a rating between zero and the maximum by sliding your finger up and down the screen.

Based on notes, knowledge of specific behaviors, feedback from other team members, etc. assign a rating that most closely reflects the employee’s behavior during the evaluation period.  Use the behavior list as a guide to decide where the employee should be rated.

Once the appropriate rating shows up on the line in the middle of the screen, touch the “Done” button at the top of the screen.  The evaluate screen will re-appear and show the rating for the facet selected.  Continue evaluating the employee for each of the facets shown in the list.

Once all facets have been evaluated, the evaluate screen will show the employee’s overall rating.  The overall rating is a combination of the importance of the facet and how the employee performed during the evaluation period.  If the employee or candidate has performed equally well in two different facets, the facet with the most importance will contribute more to the overall rating than the one with a lesser importance factor.  By the same token, two facets with the same importance will contribute different amounts to the overall rating based on how the employee performed on each of them.
